Confidence to Be

At MIS, we instill students with the Confidence to Be. We believe this is a hugely influential - and often overlooked- attribute that plays a role in individuals reaching their full potential.

Students with the Confidence to Be;
・Have a clear understanding of who they are (Knowing Me)
・Communicate effectively and build strong relationships with others (Knowing You)
・Progressively develop to become a higher, complete version of themselves (Expanding Us)

Vision

Individuals with the Confidence to Be are destined to live up to their full potential. They will competently bring their strengths to the table to collaborate on, and accomplish shared goals. They will be the movers, shakers, and pioneers of the world. They may be disagreed with, but they won't let other people’s opinions stop them from sharing their unique take on the world. The impact they will make together will be much greater than the impact one person can achieve alone, towards a more understanding, accepting world.

Values

Traits that define Knowing Me, Knowing You and Expanding Us:

1. Knowing Me (Honest, Humble, Reflective)

Individuals who display these traits are able to pay attention to their thoughts and emotions, and make a conscious choice about how to act. They understand that an unbiased awareness of their strengths and shortcomings is essential for effective self development. They are open to learning from others, understanding that everyone is a potential teacher.

2. Knowing You (Empathic, Respectful, Great Communicators)

Individuals who display these traits accept others for who they are, even if they don’t share the same opinions as them. They treat others the way they would like to be treated. They are able to recognize the emotional states of others and take action to support them. They have the skills to convey information in a way that is easily understood, and are also active listeners.

3. Expanding Us (Courageous, Grit, Open Hearted, Open Minded, Playful)

Individuals who display these traits will continue to pursue their dreams regardless of any challenges that block their way. They are able to delay gratification in exchange for achieving a long term goal. They enjoy expressing their warm, kind feelings to others, and are open to new ideas. They understand that at the end of the day life is about having fun. They focus on enjoying the journey, not just the destination.

Why it's important to nurture these traits at school:

We believe these traits should be nurtured when children are in the early stages of their life. As these traits need to be modeled and emulated, the school environment is a great place for students to practice how to deal with challenges, and the emotions they experience. A teacher is a facilitator of unpacking such an event, who can share how best to respond. Teachers can provide a strong, supportive net that catches students when they fall, and share words of encouragement to stand up and try again.
